Daniel Patrick "Pat" Mcgowan, Jr.

Yazoo City

Daniel Patrick "Pat" McGowan, Jr., 90, died at home on March 16, 2013, surrounded by his large and loving family. Pat enjoyed a long life of distinguished service to the Catholic Church, Holmes Community College, Yazoo City and County, and the local and statewide banking communities.

Born in Camden, Mississippi, on April 3, 1922, Pat was the oldest son of Daniel Patrick and Annie Ruth "Polly" Pace McGowan. He attended Camden Public Schools and graduated from Holmes Community College in 1942. During World War II, Pat served in the Army Air Corps. After the war, he graduated from Mississippi State University, with Honors, in Agricultural Economics. He served as the Extension County Agent for Yazoo County, which led him to the Bank of Yazoo City as Agricultural Agent. After receiving an additional degree from the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University, Pat rose rapidly through the ranks at the Bank of Yazoo City, eventually serving as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board. He also completed a term as the President of the Mississippi Bankers' Association from 1987 to 1988, as well as two terms of the American Bankers' Association Leadership Committee.

Active in wide-ranging areas of community life in Yazoo City and County, Pat served as President of the Community Action Board and as a board member for 25 years. He also acted as President of the Yazoo Library Society, the Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce, the Yazoo County Red Cross, the President of the Yazoo County chapter of the Mississippi State University Alumni Association, and the Service Corps of Retired Executives.

During the 48 years he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Holmes Community College, Pat served as President for a 25-year span, overseeing the construction and expansion of the Ridgeland Campus, including the Technical Service Building, which bears his name. Recipient of the Holmes Community College Distinguished Award in 1987, he also served Mississippi's Community College system during his two terms as President of the Mississippi Association of Junior and Community Colleges.

A cradle Catholic, Pat was a devoted member of St. Mary's Parish in Yazoo City. Through the years, he served the church in a number of capacities. Pat was also a devout Bulldog fan, a lover of Irish tunes, and a dynamic story teller.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth Luckett "Dibbus" McGowan, and five children: Dr. Elizabeth McGowan Montgomery (Charles) of Tupelo; Daniel Patrick McGowan, III of Clinton; Marilyn McGowan Meigs (Frank) of Birmingham, AL; Michael Oliver McGowan (Kathy) of Madison; and Catherine McGowan Stumpff of Greensboro, North Carolina. Other survivors include ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be tomorrow (Monday March 18, 2013) at St Mary's Catholic Church in Yazoo City beginning at 9:30 A.M. until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M.
