Donald W. Strickland, 53, of The Woodlands, Texas, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at home surrounded by family and friends following a lengthy illness.
Don, a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician, was born in Wesson, Mississippi, on January 24, 1960, to Randolph and Carol S. Strickland. His family moved in 1974 to Ellisville, Mississippi, where he graduated from South Jones High School in 1978. He enjoyed sports, piano, show choir, and scouting, earning Eagle Scout at age 13. He earned the A.A. degree from Jones County Junior College (1980) and B.S. degree in chemistry from Mississippi College (1982).
In 1987 he received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center and completed his residency in internal medicine at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He then joined the McDowell Medical Practice in Marion, North Carolina, and in 1996 moved to The Woodlands, Texas, where he joined the Northwest Diagnostic Clinic.
Don was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, physician, and friend. In his marriage of 22 years to Gale Pulsifer Strickland, they were devoted to their two wonderful children, their love of outdoors and fitness, including cycling, and their Christian faith and fellowship. He has touched and inspired countless lives through his strong Christian witness and his kind generous spirit. He was loved by many for his big smile, quick sense of humor, and infectious laugh. Even as a young man and later as a busy physician, Don is remembered fondly for taking the time to talk—topics often included family, pets, sports, politics, faith, and education. He was an avid reader and loved learning.
In The Woodlands, he was an active member of Stonebridge Church and the Cotton Seeds Men's Bible Class. Don spent many enjoyable hours volunteering as a coach for his children's basketball teams and then watching their teams as they advanced to junior high, high school, and college.
Don is preceded in death by his mother, Carol S. Strickland. He is survived by his wife, Gale, his daughter, Anna, and son, Hayes; his father, Randolph (Anne) Strickland, his sister, Beverly (Brock) Clark, and his brother, John (Connie) Forde; his parents-in-law, Dwayne and Christine Pulsifer; his brothers-in-law, Dale (Diane) Pulsifer, and Mike (Susie) Pulsifer; eight nieces and nephews, and many close friends, patients, and colleagues who were loved and blessed by him.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 19, at 11 a.m. at Stonebridge Church in The Woodlands, Texas. Rev. Steve Bradley will officiate.
