Ethel Lee Rogers
Ethel Lee Rogers, 85, passed away Saturday, October 26 at her home, surrounded by family.
Ethel Lee was born at Vaughn, Miss., and attended Daniel Hand School and Tougaloo Preparatory School. She had completed her teacher training and interned at the preparatory school; she enrolled at Tougaloo College and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Ethel was first in her Navy Hospital Corpsman Class. She entered the Navy X-Ray School and served three Navy years as an X-ray technician at Chelsea Naval Hospital at Newport, Rhode Island. Ethel became first lady of Arkansas Baptist College from 1956 to 1959. Ethel became a science teacher for the Jackson Public School from 1960 to 1968. During 1968-69, she earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Washington
. In 1974, she earned a specialist degree certification in science. Ethel served 10 years as the first lady of Claflin College and she served as a director of the computer science laboratory and taught math and science. After retiring in 1993, Ethel returned to Jackson, Miss., to take care of her aging father. Memorial Services will be held 11am Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Aldersgate Methodist Church.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Oscar A. Rogers Jr.; son, Christopher Rogers; parents, Jesse and Elizabeth Lewis and her brother, Jefferson Oscar Lewis, Jr.
Survivors include her sons Christian Shawn Rogers and Christoff Ian Rogers; daughter-in-law, Brenda Rogers; brother, Jesse Lewis; 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
