J.D. Rushing Jr., 68, of Murphy, formerly of Greenville, MS, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013 in Murphy Medical Center from a heart attack. He was a native of McComb, MS. After graduating from Mississippi College in Clinton, he moved to Jackson, MS where he served as executive director with the Northside Drive YMCA. J.D. later moved from Jackson to Greenville, MS in 1975 starting Hodding Carter Memorial YMCA. He retired in 2004 with 38 years of service with YMCA and moved to Murphy. He was a founding board member of the Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center in Murphy. J.D. was a member of the Murphy Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow, the Montgomery Masonic Lodge No. 426, and the Order of the Eastern Star Martha Chapter No. 246. He was an active member of the Murphy First Baptist Church. J.D. was an avid golfer, hunter, and sports enthusiast.

He was the son of the late Jewel Dorsey Rushing Sr. and Doris E. Ward Rushing of McComb, MS.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Joy Rushing; a daughter, Tina Rushing Woods and husband, John of Gainesville, FL; a son, Todd Rushing and wife, Ashli of Mount Pleasant, SC; and a sister, Carole Rushing McKellar and husband, John of Bay Saint Louis, MS. J.D. was soon to be expecting his first grandchild, a boy, the end of April.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 30 in the Murphy First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dick Stillwell officiating and Masonic rites conducted by the Montgomery Masonic Lodge No. 426. Music will be provided by Cody Killian. Honorary pallbearers will be Haskel Roberson, Ed Moody, Bob Roberson, Jackie Wayman, Dan Anderson, Dwight Otwell, Fred Armstrong, Alan Peters, David Clayton, Bill Phillips, and Bill Sturgeon.

The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 Saturday afternoon at the Murphy First Baptist Church prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of J.D. Rushing Jr. to the Murphy First Baptist Church or the Murphy First Baptist Church Widow's Ministry, 517 Hiwassee Street, Murphy, NC 28906.
