Joe Walter Terry, Jr., MD, loving husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014. Visitation will be held Monday, April 7, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Breeland Funeral Home in Canton, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. in the Breeland Chapel with burial following at Canton Cemetery.
Dr. Terry was born October 31, 1931, in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Brandon High School and attended Hinds Community College where he followed his passion for music as first chair trumpet. He continued his education at Mississippi College and was a member of the first graduating class from the new University of Mississippi Medical Center Jackson campus. After completing his internship, he moved his family to Canton, Mississippi, and engaged in the general practice of medicine for 43 years.
Dr. Terry was a renaissance man with many interests. He was an artist with a particular gift for painting magnolia flowers. He was a musician and loved playing the trumpet. He loved growing roses, fly fishing, and building model airplanes from Balsa wood. He was also an accomplished pilot. He served one year as President of the Canton Rotary Club
. He also served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Canton and served an instrumental role in building the Family Life Center. Most of all, he truly loved the practice of medicine and cherished his relationships with his patients. He delivered countless babies and made daily housecalls. He was the essence of what it means to be a small town country doctor.
He is preceded in death by his parents Edith Neal Terry and Joe Walter Terry, Sr. of Brandon, Mississippi. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Billie Terry of Canton, son Joe Walter Terry III, MD (Linda) of Canton, daughters Shannon Conner (Ben) of Canton, Melinda Brown (Jim) of Olive Branch, and Ruth Anna McDaniel (Mickey) of Tylertown. He has 11 grandchildren Allison Hancock (Dacey), Adam Plummer, Lindsey Grace Darby (Jared), Murray Ann Penn (Les),Clif Brown (Lauren), Walt Terry, Ashley Lofland (Myles), Sarah Smith (Matt), Anna Lin Conner, Caroline Terry, Morgan Plummer, and seven greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his only brother, Jerry Terry (Annette) of Biloxi, and two stepdaughters Sharon Bankson (Clyde) and Susan Barnes (Mike).
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Canton and the First United Methodist Church of Canton.
