Jois Marie Butler

Jois Marie Butler

Jois Marie Butler, 54, of Ridgeland, Mississippi, died on her birthday, August 14, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Jois graduated from Mississippi College School of Nursing in 1981 and began working at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) soon thereafter. She worked in the NICU for most of her RN staffing years and as a staff nurse in the Children's Hospital.

Jois received her Master of Science in Nursing in 1990 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham which prepared her for her role as a neonatal nurse practitioner. She returned to the UMMC to lead the development of the state's largest group of neonatal nurse practitioners. She worked for over 20 years in the NICU until just prior to her death. Jois was a preceptor and teacher of nurse practitioner students and staff RNs in her role as lead neonatal nurse practitioner. She loved each of her infant patients as well as their families. She embraced the opportunity to mentor and teach each day in the Newborn Center.

Jois was preceded in death by her father, Levoid Butler. Jois was devoted to the care of her mother, Cora M. Butler, who died on August 13, 2012, at the age of 94. Survivors include her sister, Betty Jean Hinton of McComb; brother, Donald Butler (Allison) of Ridgeland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jois was an avid Atlanta Braves and Mississippi Braves fan. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and generous friend. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a person willing to help without reservation. She was exceptionally intelligent, quick witted and always a prankster.

The mother-infant room in the NICU has been named in Jois' memory.

The family requests that memorials be made to Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39216.
