Kathleen K. Hand
Kathleen Kavanaugh Hand, 95, died Thursday, November 1, 2012 at home and surrounded by family. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated 11:00 AM, November 19, 2012 at St. James' Episcopal Church with inurnment following in the church columbarium. Visitation will begin at 10 AM at Oak Ridge Hall at St. James' Episcopal Church. Mrs. Hand was born on July 11, 1917, in St. Louis, Missouri; the daughter of the late James and Frieda Kavanaugh. After graduation from high school, Mrs. Hand attended the University Of Missouri School Of Journalism, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts. In her sophomore year, she met her future husband, Albert Powe Hand, Jr. of Shubuta, Mississippi. They were married on July 1, 1939. After graduation, they moved to Monroe, Louisiana, where Mr. Hand had accepted a position as the editor of the New Star World. In 1943, Mr. Hand joined the US Army and served in the European Theatre of Operations under General Omar Bradley and Mrs. Hand moved to Shubuta, MS to be with her in-laws while Mr. Hand was away. After returning home, Mr. and Mrs. Hand moved to Jackson where Mr. Hand began working for Godwin Advertising Agency. In 1956, they moved to Connecticut and Mr. Hand set up the New York Office of the Godwin Advertising Agency and in 1962 returned to Jackson. After retirement, they both enjoyed owning and operating Sternberg Pecan Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Hand were charter parishioners of St. James' Episcopal Church and faithful communicants. Mrs. Hand was an active member of the altar guild. She also served as choir mother for the boy's choir at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral and served on the committee that founded St. Andrew's Episcopal School. She enjoyed cooking, traveling with her family, reading and gardening. She cherished spending time with her family and will be most remembered as a loving and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always had a comforting presence and a great sense of humor. She is preceded in death by her husband Albert Powe Hand, Jr and her sister, Edna Clare Kavanaugh. Survivors include: her son, Albert P. Hand, III of Boulder, CO; son, James K. Hand of Jackson; daughter, Kathleen H. Bethea of Jackson; grandchildren, Jennifer Ayres Hand of New York, NY; Julia Brevard Hand of San Francisco, CA; Dr. Lauren Ayres Bethea of Jackson, MS; Kathleen Dallas Bethea of Beverly, MA; great grandchildren, Caitlin Tierney; Conor Tierney and Jack Tierney.
