Our dear mother, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Irwin Creel, 89, went home to be with the Lord on May 19, 2016. We celebrate her life and cherish the love she poured out on all of us. Because of her strong faith in God and countless prayers, she taught us all to love God, love family and others.

Gwen was born on September 8, 1926, in Yazoo County. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lamar Creel; grandson, Jeff Creel; sisters, Barbara Davis, Peggye Ferriss, Flo Ann Landrum; brother, Dave Irwin; and parents, Griffin and Effie Irwin. Gwen is survived by 4 sons, Richard Creel (Marilyn), Wayne Creel (Carrie), Gerald Creel (Tina), and Lanny Creel; 2 daughters, Rhonda Varner (Mike) and Amber Niven (Jackie); 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Pennye Scroggins and 3 brothers, Kerry "Bud" Irwin, Jerry Irwin and Rudy Irwin.

Gwen was a member of Bentonia Baptist Church where she served for many years as a nursery worker, on the hostess committee and in Sunday school. Gwen was a wife, mother, homemaker, excellent cook, seamstress and avid gardener.

Visitation will be held on May 21st at Stricklin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Services will be held at Bentonia Baptist Church on May 22 at 3:00 PM with visitation starting at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow the service at Dover Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons: Nick Creel, Caleb Creel, Jarrad Creel, Jace Creel, Cullan Kight, Peyton Varner and Jeremy Niven.

The family wishes to acknowledge with sincere appreciation the outpouring of love and support from family and friends, our church families, nurses and doctors at St. Dominic's Hospital, and caregivers at Martha Coker Homes (Butler House) during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Bentonia Baptist Church, St. Jude's or the charity of your choice.
