A. G. Abide, Jr.

Greenwood

Albert George Abide, Jr., of Greenwood, passed away on Tuesday morning October 11, 2011. The family will receive friends at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood Thursday Oct. 13, 2011 at 10 A.M. followed by a funeral mass at 11 A.M. with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Wilson and Knight will be in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Abide was born in Greenwood on March 8, 1930. Upon graduating from Greenwood High School, he attended the University of Mississippi. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 - 1954. He was a loyal member and communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He served on the Advisory Board and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Abide and his wife "Pat" were owners of Abide's Ladies Apparel stores where they worked together until they retired in 1990. He was a graduate of the Mississippi Realtors Institute, earning the designation of GRI and owner of Abide Realty. He was involved in many civic organizations. He was a past president of the Greenwood Jaycees, past state vice president of the Mississippi Jaycees and past member of the board of directors of the United States Jaycees. He was also a former president of the Greenwood Kiwanis Club. Mr. Abide served as county campaign chairman of the March of Dimes and co-anchored nine of the local March of Dimes telethons. He was a member of the local Board of Directors of the March of Dimes National Foundation for 18 years. He was a former president of the Leflore County chapter of the American Cancer Society, He served on the Salvation Army Advisory board, Leflore County American Red Cross Board of Directors, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, Greenwood Planning Commission, the Board of Directors of Leflore Savings and Loan and was a campaign director of the Leflore County United Givers. He received the Distinguished Service Award as Greenwood's Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1962 and was named to the 1965 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. He was preceded in death by his son, Albert (Al) George Abide, III and two sisters, Stella Abide Malouf and Marie Abide Malouf all of Greenwood.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sarah Patrick (Pat) Abide; his daughter, Karen Abide Williams and her husband Alan, of Columbus, MS and three grandchildren; Sarah Thorne Davis and her husband Ryan, of Birmingham, AL; Patrick Williams and his wife Anna of Jackson, MS and Kathleen Anne Williams of Ridgeland, MS. His sisters, Louise Abide Ellis of Greenwood and Jeane Abide Iupe of Canton, MS also survive him.

Pallbearers will be Phil Ellis, Chip Ford, Alex Malouf, Bill Malouf, Buster Norris, and John Malouf . Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Smith, Chip Crow, Wilber Roland, B.F. Jarman, Billy Leflore, and Will Barrentine.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Building Fund, Post Office Box 313, Greenwood, MS 38935 or the charity of your choice.
