Carl Stokes, 67, passed away peacefully at the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center in Houston, Texas, on Thursday, January 24, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be held at the New Zion United Methodist Church, 201 West Piazza Street in Crystal Springs, MS on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Family Hour will be held at the Westhaven Funeral Home, 3580 Robinson Road, Jackson, MS on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A native of Canton, MS, Carl was educated in the Canton Public Schools and graduated from Rogers High School in 1963. He attended Jackson State University where he received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Geography. He received a Master's degree in 1974 from Delta State University in Administration and Supervision.
Carl was first employed as a teacher and coach at Higgins High School in McComb, MS and later he taught World History at Gentry High School in Indianola, MS. He served as an assistant principal at Indianola Junior High School in Indianola, MS for one year before becoming principal at Crystal Springs Middle School. He served in this position for sixteen years until his retirement in 1998. After retirement, he worked with the Mississippi Department of Education under School Improvement, and served as an Adjunct Professor at Belhaven University. As a testament to his abilities and dedication, Carl touched the lives of many students, teachers and principals giving them encouragement, inspiration and enhancing their lives.
Carl's legacy will be cherished by his devoted wife, Dorothy Boyd Stokes; two daughters, Hazel (Mark) Townsend of Lawrenceville, GA and Carla (Charlie) Slaymon of McDonough, GA; son, Carlos Stokes of Jackson; two sisters, Carline Johnson (twin sister) and Jo Alice (Louis) Sanders, both of Canton, MS; one aunt, Huristine Hawkins of Jackson, MS; three grandchildren, Brian Hunter, Brittany Hunter, and Noah Slaymon. Also, left to cherish his memories are six sister-in-laws, four brother-in-laws; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and lifelong friends.
