Dorothy A. Murtagh


Dorothy Ashley Murtagh, age 85, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013, at South Sunflower County Hospital. Mrs. Murtagh was born in Lexington, Mississippi on January 16, 1928, and was the daughter of Gordon Swinney and Louise Carter Ashley. She loved life and her family. She was an extremely devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Murtagh helped her husband in many aspects of his farming career. They enjoyed spending as much time as possible with their daughter and grandchildren. She stayed busy with many hobbies, including gardening, canning, cooking and crafting. She never missed an opportunity to go to the Canton Flea Market. She was a member of Moorhead Methodist Church where she served as Church School Superintendent and a children's Sunday School teacher for several years. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. Mrs. Murtagh was a member of Moorhead Garden Club and served as a former president. She was a Life Member of the Mississippi State Garden Club. She was also a former leader of Junior Garden Club, and a member of Moorhead Bridge Club and Home Demonstration Club. She was actively involved with fundraising for March of Dimes for many years. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Mrs. Murtagh was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Gordon Swinney Ashley, Jr.; and her husband of 67 years, Thomas Allen Murtagh. She is survived by one daughter, Pam Walker; one granddaughter, Ashley Walker Putnam, and husband Clete; one grandson, James Thomas Walker; and three great grandchildren, Thomas Dylan Putnam, Lillian Ashley Putnam, and Emma Grace Putnam, all of Inverness. The family will receive friends, Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Burton Funeral Home. A second visitation will be held Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service at Moorhead Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery, Ebenezer, Mississippi at 2:00 pm, all under the direction of Burton Funeral Home.
