Helen Cain

Jackson

Helen Quillin Cain died Sunday, March 23, 2013, at University of Mississippi Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. She is preceded in death by her husband Gene Cain.

Mrs. Cain was born November 17, 1933 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and she received her undergraduate degree from Duke University. While working in the Chemistry Lab there, she met the love of her life, Gene Cain, a graduate Chemistry student. They were married in 1958.

Helen and Gene moved to Jackson in 1960 when he accepted a position on the faculty of Millsaps College. For the 49 years of their marriage, Helen shared every day and every joy with Gene. Together they traveled extensively, were active in First Baptist Church in Jackson and the Church of the Resurrection in Little Switzerland, North Carolina, where they maintained a cherished second home in the mountains. They were life-long explorers and learners in the decorative arts, American and European history, and classical music. While Gene distinguished himself in chemical research and teaching at Millsaps, Helen became an expert in the history and restoration of furniture and served as a consultant to the Governor's Mansion in her adopted state. In 1984, she co-authored An Illustrated Guide to the Mississippi Governor's Mansion, published by the University Press of Mississippi.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at First Baptist Church, Jackson, at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Helen will be buried in North Carolina next to her beloved husband. Memorials may be made to Mission First c/o First Baptist Church (P.O. Box 250, Jackson, MS 39205) or the C. Eugene Cain Chemistry Pre-Medical Fellowship c/o Millsaps College (1701 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39210).
