Bro. James A. Townsend, 93, a retired United Methodist Minister, died Saturday October 6, 2012 at at his home in Ackerman, MS. Visitation is Monday October 8, 2012, 5 PM until 8 PM at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS. Funeral services are 1 PM Tuesday October 9, 2012 at Louisville United Methodist Church in Ackerman, MS with burial in the Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko, MS. Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS is handling the arrangements. Bro. Townsend was born April 20, 1919. He was a graduate of Ethel High School, Wood Junior College and Delta State University. He served his country during WWll as assistant in a field hospital and as assistant to the Chaplain during which time he was called to the ministry. He will always be remembered for his kind spirit to those in need of someone with a listening ear, the spiritually bereft and his amazing memory. He loved reading, flowers, painting and music. He served the Lord in the ministry of the United Methodist Church for 33/half years. Bro. Townsend leaves two daughters, Mary Grace Chambers, wife of Eric Chambers, of Ackerman, MS and La Fonda Poland, wife of Brooks Poland, of Batesville, MS. Two brothers, Carl Townsend and Cliff Townsend of Kosciusko, 2 sisters, Nell Turnipseed of Weir, MS and Lucille Hathcock of Kosciusko. Four grandchildren - Ben and Hannah Chambers of Ackerman, Brannon Poland of Newton, MS and Anne Claire Henson, wife of Chuck Henson, of Batesville, MS and 2 great grandchildren, Brayden Poland and a precious unborn child to be welcomed in March to Chuck and Anne Claire, both of Batesville, MS, many nieces, nephews, and people that loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Douglas Townsend, and later, his wife, Bonnie Reeves Townsend, His parents, Boyd and Grace Townsend of Kosciusko, MS and brother Ralph Townsend of Kosciusko, MS.
