I am so saddened to hear of her passing. She was such an important part of my life. After I heard the news, I wrote a tribute to her and posted it to my blog. The link is provided here:

Her students may remember, as I do now, how she gave out grades; she would write your test grade on a small slip of paper, go around the room and whisper to each student words of encouragement and approval; I still have two of these slips in my wallet; I have carried them all these years, treating them as others might treat 4-leaf clovers; Not only was I a student of hers I also had the privledge of getting to know "the general", as I journeyed with Nell and Chuck on a trip to England over the holidays 1976-1977; Thank you Nell for blessing us all.......

Delta Regional Medical Center Hospice staff were truly honored to have had the awesome responsibility to care for Mrs. Nell Thomas and her family at the end of her life's journey...we are thinking of her now...sitting at the table feasting with Jesus...and Shakespeare and Hawthorne and Welty and Faulkner......thinking of Vicki and Chuck and all the family also...our thoughts and prayers are with you all..what a great family and wonderful legacy Mrs. Thomas has left behind.

“Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do. Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.” William Faulkner said that, Mrs. Thomas lived it. And she taught the rest of us to live it too. A great educator, she is remembered.

I was very saddened to hear of the loss of Mrs. Thomas. I have very fond memories of her and the lessons of Beowolf, Chaucer and Macbeth that she instilled into her students. She certainly prepared us as students at Greenville High School for their futures in college and beyond. I count it as a real blessing to have been in her classes. May the Lord comfort her family in this time of loss.

"Always go first class" is the quote I remember from her. I still had a paperback copy of John Gardener's Grendel from her till Katrina got it, and I still remember her introducing me to Dostoevsky and Voltaire. Jennifer Long, GHS class 77

As a 1970 graduate of GHS, Ms Thomas was without a doubt the most influential educator in my life. She taught me the love of great literature, the pleasures of writing and the joys on continual learning. And I can still recite the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales! My sympathies to her family in this time of loss but her legacy and influence will live on.

I was actually just thinking about Ms. Thomas last week. I was one of her students in 1968 and have fond memories of her and the literature class she taught. She was a gifted teacher and wonderful person and I feel blessed to have been one of her students.

I feel so blessed to have known Nell and been a member of her Homemakers Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church in Greenville for several years. All whose life she has blessed are much better people for having had her in our lives, even if only briefly.
