Sam McAllister


R. S. (Sam) McAllister died peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 9th in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, Dec. 11th in the chapel at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home, 350 High St. in Jackson. The memorial service will be led by The Reverend Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III and Rev. Brister Ware. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from noon until 1pm. Burial will be held at Lakewood Cemetery.

The son of R. W. McAllister and Elise Moore McAllister, Sam was born on August 8, 1917 in McComb, MS. He moved to Jackson with his family in 1919. After high school, Sam joined the United States Air Force serving his country in WW II at the Jackson Air Base as well as in the Pacific arena. He was discharged as a Warrant Officer in 1945.

Sam enjoyed a distinguished and illustrious career with Lincoln National Life Insurance Company earning every honor available to a Lincoln representative over the course of his sixty year tenure. Sam was also active in the Jackson community having served as President of the Jackson Junior Chamber of Commerce and President of the North Jackson Lions Club. Sam was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson where he taught Sunday School classes, served as President of the Couples Sunday School Class and was elected as Deacon in 1951, Elder in 1981 and receiving Emeritus status in 2000.

A sportsman, Sam was an avid turkey hunter and fisherman spending many hours with family and friends from all over the state enjoying these hobbies. He enjoyed playing bridge and was known at Kroger and around town as "the hat man".

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Genell C. McAllister; his sons R. S. McAllister Jr. (BJ) and R. Conner McAllister both of Jackson and John D. McAllister (Amy) of Madison; his grandsons R. S. McAllister III (Amy) of Brandon, Dave of Ridgeland and Sam (Mary Jane) of Birmingham, AL; his two great-granddaughters Sara Conner and Rivers; and many nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his brother R. W. McAllister Jr.; his sisters, Mrs. H. C. Bailey and Mrs. Lorraine Stoneburner; and his grandson, Wynn H. McAllister.

The family would like to recognize and thank Sam's many friends and extended family for their love and support. A special thanks and sincerest gratitude to the wonderful care Sam has received over the last several years by Daryl Howard, Linda Cheaton, Erma Neal, Robin Davis, Carrie Gypson and Lolita Jackson.

Pallbearers will be the Deacons and Elders of the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. Honorary Pallbearer will be lifelong friend and business associate, Auburn Lambeth.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Sam's memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, French Camp Academy or a .
