Thomas Allen Murtagh, 85 of Moorhead, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013 at his home. He was born in Ebenezer, Mississippi on December 29, 1927, and was the son of Thomas Edwin and Nita Thomas Murtagh. He loved farming, and at age 14 made his first cotton crop in Holmes County. In 1946, he married Dorothy Ashley, and they made their home in Ebenezer. In 1955, they moved to Moorhead for him to pursue a career in farming. He was drafted that same year, and served his country in the United States Army. He was very active in his community. He was a member of the founding board of Indianola Academy. He was the former president of the Moorhead Drainage District and a former member of the Board of Alderman for the City of Moorhead. He also served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Duncan Gin, and served as vice president of Baird Gin. He was a member of Moorhead Methodist Church where he served as a member of the Administrative Council for many years. Mr. Murtagh was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Ashley Murtagh of Moorhead; one daughter, Pam Murtagh Walker of Inverness; one sister, Patricia Murtagh Bobo of Tupelo; two grandchildren, Ashley Walker Putnam and James Thomas Walker; and three great grandchildren, Thomas Dylan Putnam, Lillian Ashley Putnam, and Emma Grace Putnam. The family will received friends Tuesday, September 10, 2013 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Burton Funeral Home. A second visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Moorhead Methodist Church. Burial will be held at 3:00 pm in Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery in Ebenezer, Mississippi. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola is in charge of arrangements.
