Warren Blake Obituary

Warren Harrison Blake, 80, died Monday, August 10, 2009, at home. Visitation is 4-7 pm today at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral services are 10 am Thursday, August 13, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with burial in Pocahontas Cemetery.
Mr. Blake was born November 12, 1928, at the family's Willow Brook Farm on Hwy 49 in Jackson. At age 12, he was riding horses to heard dairy cattle where he helped his father run the dairy. He attended Liberty Grove School and graduated from Central High School in 1946, where he was a member of the basketball team.
Mr. Blake served with the Mississippi National Guard where he enjoyed being a member of the basketball and baseball teams in 1946 and 1947. He also served as a driver for the returning WWII Major Hal Battle on trips to Fort Benning, GA.
After graduating from Hinds Junior College, he was employed by Ready Mix Cement where he made friends with his bosses and co-workers. He worked for 39 years for Mississippi Power and Light Company, retiring August 1, 1991 from the Rex Brown Steam Plant.
He was a member of Pocahontas Methodist Church and Clinton Methodist Church.
Mr. Blake worked tirelessly for his Pocahontas community, often being referred to as the "unofficial mayor of Pocahontas". He ran the Pocahontas Water Dept. and in his younger years served on the Pocahontas Volunteer Fire Dept.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Phyllis Ann Blake; parents, Warren E. and Vera Harrison Blake; and sister, Margaret June Blake Wells.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years Faye Blake; daughter, Carol Blake Hockman of Littleton, CO; daughter, Lin Whittington (Kim) of Montgomery, AL; grandsons, Matt and Tom Hockman of Littleton, CO, Kyle Whittington of Birmingham, AL and Ethan Whittington of Montgomery, AL; brother, Anderson Lannie Blake (Cynthia); and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to thank their many friends and neighbors for their help and support throughout their years as members of the Pocahontas community. Mr. Blake loved his little town. He never met a stranger and was loved by many. He will be very missed by his family and friends.

I really enjoyed working with Blake at Rex Brown. We laughed a lot and he taught me a lot about power plants.
