Harvey Burton Smith (Burt) passed away peacefully on Mach 23, 2014 at the age of 93. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 14, 1920. Burt was devoted to his wife Jan, whom he lovingly cared for until her death in 2010, after 68 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughters: Nina Baxter and Anne Perry and husband Alan, five grandchildren: Steve Shafer and wife, Jessica, Janet Bradley, Taylor Bradley, Brett Baxter, Blake Baxter, and three great-grandchildren.
Burt graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and was a veteran of World War II in Europe. He was employed by Midland Container Corporation as sales manager in St. Louis when he returned from the war. In 1961, he was sent to Jackson to start a new facility for that company. His one-man operation soon grew into a productive, profitable organization. After running the Jackson facility for 30 years, he retired in 1991.
He was an avid golfer, a member of Jackson Country Club and continued to be active in the Senior Golf Association. He was proud of his trophies testifying to his skill at making "hole-in-one." He was loved and admired by all who knew him. He possessed the all-too-rare qualities of honesty, integrity, generosity, and steadfastness. He enjoyed being with people and had a smile and twinkle in his yes that made everyone around him smile in return.
How lucky his family, to have been loved by Burt.
