Van Dyke "Doc" Quick


Born March 26, 1933 in Dentville, MS to H.T. and Mary Quick. Van graduated from Hazlehurst High School and attended Mississippi College as a freshman in 1951. He graduated from MC in 1955. He married Shelly Smyly in June of that year. After graduation he attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He received a Masters of Divinity in 1958. He became youth minister at Bellevue Baptist under the leadership of Dr. R.G. Lee. While in Memphis, he and his wife Shelly had a set of twins, Sharon Lee and Karon Lynn. In 1960, he was called to Mississippi College as the director of the student center. He remained at MC until he retired in 1999 as Vice President of Student Personnel. Doc received his Doctorate from Mississippi State University. He was chaplain in the United States Army Reserves where he retired as a Colonel. Doc was also a member of the Mississippi High School Athletic Association as a high school football coach.

Doc is survived by his wife, Shelly Smyly; two daughters Sharon Wilson (Jim) and Karon McMillan (Dale); three grandchildren Wendy Lomenick (Jay), Jason McMillan and Laura Wilson; one great grandchild, Harper Lomenick. Doc is preceded in death by his parents, H.T. and Mary Quick. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Doc Quick scholarship fund of Mississippi College.
