Monroe Stewart, Jr.
Monroe Stewart, Jr., a native of Monroe, LA, was born on April 10, 1940. He was the third of nine children born to the late Monroe Stewart, Sr., and Roberdia Robinson Stewart. At an early age, he united with China Grove Baptist Church, where he attended Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a faithful church member; for 47 years, he was a member of Farish Street Baptist Church, Jackson, MS.
Graduating from Terzia High School of Monroe, LA, Monroe excelled in football and track and field, gaining the attention of various college recruiters. He graduated from Alcorn A&M College, Lorman, MS, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Arts Education and furthered his education at Jackson State College, earning a Master of Science Degree in Administration and Supervision.
Monroe served two years in the United States Army. His love for his fellowman was demonstrated freely in his neighborhood, church, and to family and friends; lives of many people were touched by his generosity, conversation, and surprising wit. He worked with the International Brotherhood of Teamster Union until retirement in 1998; he found enjoyment in driving and was an avid reader of the atlas.
Monroe died on Friday, July 4, 2014, at the VA Medical Center. Immediate survivors are his loving wife, Eleanor Eiland Stewart; son, Monroe Antonius (Sonia) Stewart III; daughter, Shelley DeEtte Stewart Walker; grandson, Cedric Dewayne Walker, II; one brother, John H. Stewart of Albuquerque, NM; five sisters—Sarah Stewart of Oakland, CA; Leslie Stewart-Scott of Pickerington, OH; Deloris Stewart of Albuquerque, NM; Joycie Stewart and Dorothy Stewart of Monroe, LA.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Farish Street Baptist Church (619 North Farish Street, Jackson, MS 39202). Visitation is Friday, July 11, 2014, from 1 - 7 p.m. (family present 5-7 p.m.) at Lakeover Funeral Home, 1525 Beasley Rd., Jackson, MS 39206.
