Edwina C. Rogers

Madison

Edwina Christine Sprowles Rogers, age 89, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Highland Home in Ridgeland, MS. A native of Jackson, she was born the fifth of six children to Nettie and William B. Sprowles on April 11, 1925. She was the widow of Willard B. Rogers, Sr., to whom she was married for 64 years. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, her concern for all children was evidenced in her service as a school bus driver for 12 years, working also in the cafeteria at Forest Hill High School while her children were in school, and later as a crossing guard for Hinds County and Jackson Police Department. Her life stories frequently included the adventures of her daily bus routes and driving for special trips to Forest Hill Rebels athletic events. Later on she took great pride in assuring that the students of Oak Forest Elementary made it safely to and from school each day.

Edwina was a member of Eastern Star and a member of the Wahabi Shrine Greeterettes. In recent years, she greatly enjoyed participating in her Silver Sneakers exercise class where she made many new friends. She was a member of Westview Baptist Church until its dissolution and also often attended Twin Lakes Baptist and Madison United Methodist churches with her daughters. As a resident of Highland Home for the past year, she brought much cheer and concern for others while even she was under the watchful eye of a staff of loving caregivers.

Mrs. Rogers is survived by her daughter Gay Hughes (Bob), Madison, MS; daughter Carolyn Rhaly (Thomas), Madison, MS; son Willard B. (Buddy) Rogers, Jr. (Sherrie), La Porte, TX, and special nephew, Ricky Torrance, La Grange, GA. In addition she is survived by her brother, John William Sprowles, Sr. (Lena) of Jackson, MS; special sister-in-law Nancy Callaway of Delhi, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren are Coleman Rogers Hughes, Raleigh, NC; John David Garriga (Angelique) and their children Caleb and Alyssa of Ocean Springs, MS; Nicki Rogers Werner (Sam), Houston, TX; and Cody Davis Rogers, La Porte, TX.
