Sara Madison Tyson Harris, 94, of Clarksdale, Mississippi died at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Mississippi on July 18, 2014. A family burial will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 4 pm in Holly Springs, Mississippi with her grandson-in-law, Reverend Samuel Husband officiating. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, Mississippi is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Harris was born on April 9, 1920 in Holly Springs. She grew up there and later attended The Memphis Academy of Art. During WWII, she moved to San Antonio, Texas and met her true love, Keith, on a blind date. They married, moved to Clarksdale, and raised their three children.
Mrs. Harris was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She was an active member and served on various committees for over fifty years. She is responsible for starting the Chrismon tree and helping to create the ornaments that adorn the sanctuary every Christmas. These ornaments symbolize special events and people in the Bible. She was invited to many other churches throughout the state to help start their Christmon trees. She loved the Lord and served Him in any way she could.
Survivors include her son, William M. Harris (Marcia) of Seattle, WA and daughters Anne McDaniel (Doug) of Jackson, MS and Lucy Sawyer (Woody) of Lyon, MS; brother, Dr. Jack Tyson (Helen) of Nashville, TN. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren who affectionately loved her and called her Nana. They are Sara Tyson Husband (Samuel) of Memphis, TN, Dr. Taylor Sawyer (Ellen) of Columbia, SC, Doug McDaniel, Jr. of Birmingham, AL, Caroline McDaniel of Memphis, TN, Mike Powers (Tiffany), Patrick Powers, and Tara Powers of Seattle, WA, and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Husband, Jr. and Grace Powers.
Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Roy Harris, her parents, Edmund Taylor Tyson and Anne Martin Greene Tyson, and her brothers, Edmund Tyson, Jr. and Dr. Robert E. Tyson.
