George L. Brock


George Lee Brock, 90, a retired architect, died Friday, February 8, 2013, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS.

Mr. Brock was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He received a B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Georgia Tech and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1948, he received his Bachelor of architecture from Oklahoma State and later obtained a master's degree in architecture from the University of Florida.

During World War II, he was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army Engineers.

Before coming to Jackson in the summer of 1948 to work for the architectural firm of N.W. Overstreet & Associates, he had been with the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in New York City. Later he worked for Jay T. Liddle, Architect, before opening his own architectural office in Jackson in 1962.

Mr. Brock was the architect of many residences, doctors' clinics, offices and public buildings in and around central Mississippi. He was the architect of many buildings on the Raymond campus of Hinds Community College.

Mr. Brock was a charter member and a deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was also a charter member of the Capitol City Kiwanis Club and served as its president in 1960.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Gillespie Brock; sons, Miller Lee Brock (Susie) of Huntsville, AL, and Tyler Miles Brock (Carol) of Madison, MS; daughter, Lillian Brock Hedges (Jim) of Memphis, TN; and grandchildren, Wren Cromwell, Rachel Brock Luther, Elizabeth Brock, Caroline Brock, Katherine Brock, James G. Hedges, III, Meredith Brock, Anna Brock and Emma Brock.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday February 12th, 2013 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson, MS with a visitation immediately following at the church. A small family graveside service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park on Clinton Blvd. preceding the memorial service. Lakewood Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
