John Wayne Belknap

Crystal Springs

John Wayne Belknap, 69, of Crystal Springs, died of complications of pneumonia, June 27.

Born February 24, 1944, to Bruce Webster and Leila Downing Belknap, Mr. Belknap graduated from Edwards School, Raymond High School, Hinds Junior College, and Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology in 1967. After five years at Union Carbide Corporation in Hahnville, La., he returned to Hinds County to do what he loved, farming. In 1979 he began his 30 year service at Oakley Training School.

Mr. Belknap grew up in Reeves Chapel Methodist Church, later Hinds Independent Methodist Church. In 1976 he joined First Presbyterian Church in Crystal Springs. As a faithful member, he served as a youth group leader, deacon, chairman of the deacons, elder, and chaplain to the Session, after being elected the youngest elder up until that time. A charter member of the Mississippi Forge Council, later part of the Craftsman's Guild, Mr. Belknap enjoyed crafting white oak baskets. He selected the tree, rived the splits, and weaved the baskets. He was interested in every aspect of the natural world.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Nancy Jane Worrell Belknap, sons Dr. John David Belknap of Crystal Springs, and Dr. Charles Lindsey Belknap of Hattiesburg, daughers-in-law Ashley Hall Belknap and Claire Smith Belknap, and two grandchildren Griffin Worrell Belknap and Katherine Myrick Belknap. Other survivors include siblings Bruce W. Belknap, Jr., Mrs. Mary Belknap Gressett (Bill), Dr. Amos Belknap (Gean Claire), four nephews, one niece, and their children.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 30, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church of Crystal Springs. Visitation will be at Stringer Funeral Home in Crystal Springs 5-7 pm, Saturday, June 29, and at 1 pm at the church, Sunday. Interment will be at Edwards Cemetery in Edwards at 4 pm.

Pallbearers will be Bill Lee, Bob Lee, Richard Batton, Sid Watters, Christopher Gressett, and Clayton John Gressett. Honorary pall bearers will be Mr. Bob Knight and Elders Emeritus Dr. Jimmy Little, Alton Purvis, James Hudson, and Tony Brooks.
