James Matthew Shearer
Sgt. James Matthew Shearer, 23, died Sunday, September 8, 2013. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Woodland Hills Baptist Church. A private graveside service will follow Friday, September 13, 2013 at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. James was born on December 3, 1989 in Flowood, the son of Mart and Kimberly Shearer. A 2008 graduate of Bailey Magnet School, he joined the Mississippi Army National Guard at age 17. From May 2009 to March 2010, James served his country in Iraq as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to HQs & HQ Company, 155th Brigade, Special Troops Battalion. For his service, James was awarded the Army Achievement Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal. Upon returning to Jackson, James married Heather Keenan on February 24, 2011. He was awarded a full academic scholarship at Jackson State University and was currently in his senior year studying political science. While at JSU, James served as the Operations Officer for ROTC and as a Top MS IV Cadet. He also served as the Religious Council Senator in the Student Government Association. James was a life time member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church and in his younger years participated in Sunday school and youth activities. He enjoyed music and played both the keyboard and drums. James loved nature and animals. He is survived by his wife, Heather Keenan Shearer and son Brian both of Jackson; mother and father, Mart Harvey Shearer and Kimberly Gilbert Shearer both of Jackson; brothers, William and Christopher Shearer both of Jackson; maternal grandparents, William and Margarett Gilbert of Abbeville, AL; paternal grandparents, Ben & Jimmie F.
