Hollis Shoemaker Obituary
Ridgeland
Mr. Hollis Shoemaker, 76, passed away October 16, 2013 from complications from lung cancer. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland. Visitation will also be held at 10:00AM, Friday October 18, 2013 at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson followed by a funeral service at 11:00AM.
Hollis was born to the late Ezra and Saleta Shoemaker August 22, 1937 in Magee, MS. He graduated from Magee High School in 1956 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi College in 1961.
His professional career consisted of real estate. As a home builder he was involved with constructing over 1500 homes, as well as developing many subdivisions; Orchardview and Farmington Station in Rankin county; as well as Red Oak Plantation, Ridgefield, Ashbrooke and Wellington in Madison county.
Hollis was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Home Builders Association. He served as President of the Jackson association in 1978 and the Mississippi association in 1983. He was inducted into the Mississippi Housing Hall of Fame in 2006.
His hobbies included golfing with his friends and family, attending Ole Miss football games, and spending time at the family farm or relaxing in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Hollis is survived by the love of his life and wife of 43 years Sylvia "Sam" Shoemaker, sons Scott (Leigh) and Kevin (Missy), his 7 grandchildren, Mackenzie, Mason, Belle, Tinsley, Ezra, Jude and Sy Shoemaker, his siblings W.C. "Dub" Shoemaker, Virginia McNease and Jean Shoemaker. He is preceded in death by his sister Carolyn Wightman. Hollis also leaves behind countless cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bobby Graham and the staff at St. Dominic's Cancer Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Christ United Methodist Church building fund.

Scott Shoemaker built my 5th home which Hollis built the last four. Today I am moving out of my 5th house. As I sit waiting on movers this site pops up on my phone had no idea today was the anniversary of Hollis passing.
He was someone who was very important in my life. I have a lot of faith and I know Hollis just said hello and also wanting to know when is Scott going to build your 6th home??
Heres to my friend Hollis who taught me a lot in home construction also to someone who was a dear friend.

Mrs. Shoemaker- we were so sorry to hear about Mr. Shoemaker! I have so many fond memories of him and Ole Miss games!! The one that comes to mind is when I sat in my chocolate birthday cake with my white painter pants on!! I have told so many stories about all these memories with him in them! Sylvia, We are so very sorry to hear about Hollis. We were on the road and did not hear about it until late yesterday. We will miss him greatly at the family reunions. Our prayers are with you and your family.

So sorry to learn of the passing of Hollis. Your Dad was so special and ahead of his time in construction. I will always remember how helpful he was to me when I was appraising.

I will miss Hollis very deeply. We allied on many a Homebulider's issue and had some of the best of times. He was a great friend and a true tribute to the homebuilding industry both in Mississippi and nationally. My deepest sympathies to Sam and the entire family. Although I will not be able to attend the services, my and Rhonda's thoughts, prayers and friendship go with you all.

Hollis was a close friend and someone that taught me many aspects when it came to building a home. I trusted him so much he built me 5. Over the years we always kept in touch and checked in. Hollis will be greatly missed! When I think of Hollis I think of 3 things:
