Brent Ray Tofflemire, 75, died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Neb., on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017.
A celebration of life ceremony was held in at the United Methodist Church, (where he was baptized, confirmed, married and laid to rest), in Wessington Springs, S.D., on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Zach Kingery officiating.
Brent was born July 12, 1942, to Lewis and Tillie (Jenner) Tofflemire, the second of six children. Brent graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1961 and then attended college in Springfield, S.D.
Following college, Brent worked on the construction of the Big Bend Dam near Chamberlain, S.D. He also worked at Swans Bakery in Rapid City and the Homestake Mine in Lead, S.D.
Brent married the love of his life, Maxine (Horsley), on May 30, 1964. Brent and Maxine moved to Dumont, where he worked at the Henderson Mine in Empire until his medical retirement. They loved living in Colorado, and this is where they raised their three children. In 2011, Brent and Maxine moved to Nebraska to be closer to their grandchildren.
Brent enjoyed camping, fishing and riding motorcycles when his health allowed him to. After his retirement, he enjoyed playing cards, cooking, gardening and watching sports. He was a licensed HAM radio operator, and enjoyed working on computers and other electronics.
Family was very important to Brent, and he attended as many of his children's and grandchildren's activities as he could. Equally important to him was spending time with extended family. He rarely missed a family reunion, celebration or event.
Brent loved traveling and saw much of the country before his disability kept him from doing so.
Brent is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maxine (Horsley) Tofflemire; daughter Marcyne (Scott) Johnson and their daughters, Chelsea and Katie, and great-grandson Noah; son Kelly (Leigh Anne) Tofflemire and children Marcus, Megan, Avery and Emme; two brothers; a sister; a brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
