I knew Dr. Purcell both as a Spanish professor and an associate when I worked as department secretary in Modern Languages at CSU. He was an amiable, fair, caring and intelligent man, and a wonderful teacher. I will continue to keep him in my thoughts.

My sympathy to the family of Dr. John Purcell. I was a student of his at CSU in the early 80's. He was a consummate professional and I greatly enjoyed his Spanish language classes. I particularly remember the beautiful ceremony he hosted for Sigma Delta Pi honor society which was a highlight of my time at CSU. He will be remembered and missed.

As a colleague, mentor and friend, John Purcell was simply the finest. He always looked for the best in others and, I believe, brought out the best in them. From his own students to the many teachers he worked with until his retirement I have never heard of his being anything but humane, fair, thoughtful and creative. His leadership of the Ohio Foreign Language Association was forward-looking and his chairmanship of the Modern Languages Department at CSU was exemplary. He provided a wonderful model for my professional career and was a good friend at all times. He is sorely missed

Dr. Purcell was a wonderful teacher. He encouraged me to study Spanish at Middlebury College, and his wonderful foreign language methods class made a profound impact upon the way I structure my classes and the methods I use. He made a tremendous impact upon foreign language teaching in Ohio, and he was a kind and caring person. May he rest in peace.

John was both my predecessor and my successor as department chairman in the department of Modern Languages at Cleveland State University. During my years here John has become a friend. He will be greatly missed.

I have known John Purcell since 1970 when, as its new chairman, I brought him to the Department of Modern Languages at Cleveland State University. He became a good friend and a wonderful colleague. As a teacher of future language teachers, he inspired many students who now teach in area schools. My wife and I will miss him very much.
