James F. Steiner, 93

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — MGySgt, James Francis Steiner (USMC Retired), 93, entered peacefully into rest on Nov.30, 2013.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Moser officiating. Entombment, will full military honors, will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.

Mr. Steiner was born May 31, 1920 to the late Katherine and Mathias Steiner in Brooklyn, N.Y. He began his military career in 1939 at the age of 19 by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During this time, he served in WWII, Korean War, and three tours of Vietnam. He was wounded on Iwo Jima and was decorated with the Purple Heart. He was also the recipient of the Bronze Star and numerous other ribbons and commendations. He married the late Ruby Shipp in 1952, and they lived in Jacksonville together for 59 years. After retiring from the Marine Corps in August of 1969, Jim went to work for Weyerhaeuser Company and continued there for 15 years. He retired in 1984. Jim was a loving, caring and generous man and was respected by his family and friends.

His brothers Patrick, Vincent, and Matthew predecease him.

Jim is survived by his sister, Margaret Hoffman of Elmont, N.Y.; daughters, Sandy Pearce of Jacksonville, N.C. and Tracie Hasslocher and husband Jimmy, San Antonio, Texas; grandson, Jonathan Pearce of Jacksonville, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, prior to the service, beginning at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to the Wounded Warrior Project, 3025 John Quick Road, MCB Quantico, VA 22134, c/o Charitable Donations Coordinator or to Northwoods United Methodist Church, 1528 Gum Branch Road, Jacksonville, N.C. 28540.
