Memorial services for Harrison S. Deen, 90, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Thurs., July 10, 2014, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Kenneth Broad officiating.
Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. Jerry Deen, Allen Deen, Dan Lord, Jimmy Ward, Cody Deen, Bruce Deen, Jesse Ward, Seth Deen, Mike Powers, Fayrene Powers and Jimmy Medlock will service as honorary pallbearers.
Those desiring to make memorial contributions may send them to Roosevelt General Hospital to be used to purchase new, comfortable chairs for the patient rooms.
The family will gather at the home of Allen and Karen Deen, 2751 S. Roosevelt Road 6, Portales, NM 88130. Harrison Scott Deen was born two miles west of Portales to Rosemond (Scott) and James Porter Deen on Mar. 1, 1924, and died July 6, 2014, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was one of a family of ten children, consisting of five boys and five girls. Harrison attended the Portales Schools, and went into the United States Coast Guard on June 7, 1942. He served approximately three years in St. Augustine and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In 1945, he was assigned to the Philippines. He sailed from the Philippines to Okinawa at the time the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. His ship was assigned to transfer Army engineer occupational forces from the Philippines to Okinawa; to move Japanese Army troops from China to Japan; and to move Chinese POW's in Japan back to China. He was discharged from the Coast Guard in the spring of 1946 at Long Beach, CA, and returned to Portales to begin farming. He spent more than 65 years farming west of Portales before retiring in 2013. Harrison was married to Betty Sue McCurdy on Jan. 31, 1948 in Roswell. From this union, four children were born, two girls and two boys. Mrs. Deen preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 1981. On Mar. 11, 1983, in Portales, he was married to Miriam Barck. Harrison served ten years on the Roosevelt General Hospital Board, and three years on the FHA Loan Committee. He and his wife, Sue, sponsored several Floyd senior class trips, and Harrison sponsored several FFA trips as well. He and Miriam have been members of the Central Christian Church of Portales since their marriage. The couple moved to their new home in Portales in 1993.Mr. Deen is survived by Miriam Deen, his wife of 31 years of their home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Helen Deen of Clovis and Allen and Karen Deen of Floyd; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dan Lord of El Paso, TX and Patsy and Jimmy Dale Ward of Elida; two step-daughters, Col. Emily Perry currently stationed in Kuwait and Rebecca Schulman of Baltimore, MD; nine grandchildren, Amanda Brown, Cody Deen, Bruce Deen, Jesse Ward, Lindsey White, Seth Deen, Addison Deen, Patti O'Hare and Kathleen Wagner; two step-grandchildren, Luke and Adelaide Schulman; fourteen great-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter who is expected on Oct. 31st, 2014; and one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Ray Bradley of Myrtle Beach, SC. In addition to his first wife, Sue, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, John, Robert, James P. and George Deen; four sisters, Sybil Inez, Scottie Deen, Rosamond Grove and Annie Mitchell; and a grandson, Wesley Lord who died in 2000.Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. 575-356-4455,wheelermortuary.net
