The Mass of the Resurrection for Jerry Garcia, 60, of Portales, will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Wed., Jan. 8, 2014, at St. Helen Catholic Church with Fr. James McGowan as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Adam Gomez, Rick Garcia, Michael Baca, Daniel Gomez, Devyn Garcia and Alfonso Gomez serving as pallbearers. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM, Tues., Jan. 7, 2014, at St. Helen Catholic Church.
Jerry L. Garcia was born Sept. 16, 1953, in Portales to the home of Katie (Larranaga) and Edward D. Garcia and died at his home in Portales on Jan. 4, 2014. Mr. Garcia was a 1973 graduate of Portales High School. Following graduation he worked for the local Fire Dept. for about two years as a fire fighter and EMT. About 1975, Jerry moved to Phoenix, AZ where he worked in construction for the next five years. About 1980 he moved to Farmington, NM and eventually became a gourmet chef at the San Juan Country Club. In 2005, Jerry moved back to Portales to make his home. During the past eight years he had been employed as a dietician and cook at Roosevelt General Hospital, and was named Employee of the Year for 2007. Recently, he had been working at the local Taco Box. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
He is survived by five sons, Chris Garcia and his companion, Seana Hobbs of Colorado Springs, CO, Israel Garcia and his wife, Chelsea of Portales, and Carlos Garcia and Joey Garcia both of Farmington, NM; four daughters, Tanya Baca and her husband, Michael of Portales, Valarie Garcia and Kimberley Garcia both of Farmington, NM and Loriann Garcia of Denver, CO; twelve grandchildren; his mother, Katie Garcia of Portales; two brothers, Paul Garcia and his wife, Angie of Santa Maria, CA and Lawrence Garcia and his wife, Linda of Albuquerque; and a sister, Connie Wilson of Portales. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Edward Garcia.
