Funeral services for Mildred Welch, 89, of Portales, were at 10:00 AM. Wed., July 2, 2014, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Dennis Harper officiating.
Burial followed in the Portales Cemetery with Craig Cobb, Justin Welch, Johnny Stegall, Wes King, Kevin King, Teal Bennett, Tate Bennett, Tristan Pogue, Martin Ortiz and Trevor Cobb serving as pallbearers. All family friends and other family members will be honorary pallbearers.

Verda Mildred Welch, known to everyone as Mildred, was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Bengal, OK to the home of Sarah Jane (Blankenship) and Andrew Jackson Myers and died June 27, 2014 in Portales, NM.
As a girl, she moved with her family to the Taiban/LaLande area near Fort Sumner. She attended school in Fort Sumner. The Myers family later moved to Portales in the early 1940's. She met W. D. "Shorty" Welch on a blind date and the couple was married Dec. 24, 1948. For a short time they lived in El Paso, but in 1950, they returned to Portales, and this was her home the remainder of her life. Mrs. Welch was a faithful Christian and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Congregation in Portales. She enjoyed going to estate sales and antique stores where she amassed a sizable collection of antique dishes and other collectibles. She also enjoyed painting in oils and pastels. Mrs. Welch was a devoted wife and mother.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Debbie Welch and David Welch of Portales; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donita and Tony Noble of Friona, TX, Janice and Danny Bennett of Clarendon, TX and Beverly and Kevin Boyd of Bosque Farms, NM; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth Myers of Albuquerque.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jack Myers, a sister, Mary Lack, a son, Billy D. Welch in 1978 and by her husband, W. D. "Shorty" Welch, who died Jan. 19, 2000, after more than 52 years of marriage.
