Rosary for Jesus "Chumel" M. Payen, 72, of Portales, will be recited at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at St. Helen Catholic Church. Mass of the resurrection will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at St. Helen with Fr. James McGowan officiating. Burial will follow at Portales Cemetery with Miguel Payen, Raymundo Payen, Carlos Anaya, Matthew Poynor, Michael Poynor, and Marcus Armijo as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be all his family and friends and Musicians with the St. Helen Choir.
Chumel was born on June 13, 1940, in San Juan, Chihuahua, Mexico to Juan and Guadalupe (Levario) Payen and went to be with the Lord on December 9, 2012, in Portales. He went to school in Mexico and moved to Portales in the 1950's. He met Anita Guerrero, thru his sisters, in Portales and the two were married on December 2, 1961, in Portales. Chumel was a Mason in the construction trade every since he moved to Portales. He was very active at St. Helen Catholic Church and played a guitar in the church choir for many years. He loved to sing, and play the guitar. Most of all he was a loving and devoted father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather. He also loved to tell stories.
Chumel was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sisters, Israel Payen, Albert Payen, Elfidia Gardunl, and his son-in-law, Mark Poynor.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anita Payen of Portales; his children, Jesus Manuel Payen and wife, Arcilia and Raymundo Payen and wife, Sofia; his daughters, Analisa Bhakta and husband, Neil, Sylvia Poynor, and Marisol Williams and husband, Hobart. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Armando Payen, Elva Aranda and husband, Horacio, Eva Armijo and husband, Eddy, Olga Aldaz, Nina Payen and Estelda Areniva; fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
