1932 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Richard Gene Weems Obituary
Richard Gene Weems, age 80, finally won the war after losing so many hard-fought battles with Alzheimer's when he went home to meet our Lord on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
Gene was born on October 30, 1932, in Rotan, TX and was one of thirteen children born to Amanda Pearl and Wesley Weems. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Callan and Robert Weems, sisters Etta Pearl Stevens and Dean Levens, his son Elton Weems, and dear family friend Carolyn Thompson.
Gene is survived by a beautiful family that includes his wife, Bernice of the family home in Moriarty, NM; his children, Richard Weems and wife Judy, of Winnemucca, NV; daughter Sherry Collins and husband Paul, of Los Lunas, NM; daughter-in-law Glennys Weems-Elliott and husband Rusty, of Albuquerque, NM; and son Dean Weems and wife Janelle, of Centennial, CO. Gene has ten grandchildren - Shawn, Jason, Jennifer, Stephanie, Brandon, Preston, Nathaniel, Matthew, Chris, and Laura - and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by one sister, Priscilla Hamilton, and five brothers, Danny, Donny, David, Hugh, and Warren Weems. Gene and Bernice were greatly supported by the love and care of sister-in-law Christeen Weems throughout their time in Portales.
Gene was a Seismic Driller by trade. As a Lead Driller, he was asked for by name by all of the large oil and gas industries in the 70's and 80's. Later in his career, he owned Weems Drilling and drilled for everything from Uranium to water. Gene had many experiences including being a dairyman, and a machinist, to working in a deep sea bait and tackle shop. He and Bernice retired to Portales, NM and grew alfalfa and produce. When Gene became too sick to continue working, he and Bernice moved to Moriarty to be closer to their grandchildren.
Gene was always singing a song - George Jones and Tom T. Hall were some of his favorite singers, and he loved a beautiful hymn. Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching football, and always looked forward to the next adventure.
Family services were held at the Moriarty Church of Christ on Monday, May 27, 2013, at 11:00 a.m.
A memorial service for extended friends and family will be held at the 3rd and Kilgore Church of Christ on Saturday August 17, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. At noon immediately preceding the service, a meal will be served to all those wishing to attend.
