Roger Garrett Obituary

Published by Clovis News Journal and Portales News-Tribune on Apr. 20, 2012.
Memorial services for Roger T. Garrett, 64, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 23, 2012, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Dr. David McFadden officiating, assisted by Chandra Crane, Kennan Crane, Charlie Crane, Carolyn Thompson and Duane Ryan. Glen Bradshaw, Robert Encinias, James Akins and Ron Jackson have been named as honorary pallbearers.
Roger T. Garrett was born November 19, 1947, in St. George, SC, to Beatrice Garrett and died April 18, 2012, in Portales after a brief, but valiant battle with cancer. He grew up in St. George, where he finished school when he was only 16. After finishing high school, Roger worked as a bookkeeper for a small company in New York. He went on to attend a year of college before enlisting in the Army in 1967. Roger was certified in radio maintenance and repair, and served near the front lines in Viet Nam from August 1968 until August 1969.
Roger moved to Clovis in 1976, where he worked doing electronics repair, and attended Eastern New Mexico University. After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and History, he began working on his Master's Degree. It was in a Psychology class that he met a fellow student, Victoria Wood. They were married on July 9, 1983. For about two years, Roger worked for Teleprompter Cable TV. In 1985, he established Garrett Precision Electronics, doing repair and maintenance on professional amplifiers for various musicians and recording studios, as well as small electronics and car stereos for local businesses. Later he went to work at KENW-FM as the FM Production Director, taking responsibility for maintaining all of the FM equipment.
Roger left Eastern in 1996 to establish Cozy Cottage Industries, making StitchMate Needlework Floor Stands which he designed, patented, and built. He handcrafted each one and shipped them literally all over the world.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria of their home; a daughter and son-in-law, Chandra and Kennan Crane of Clinton, MS; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger Harold and Laura Garrett of Charleston, SC; 4 grandchildren, Annabel Crane, Timothy Alexander, Ian Garrett, and Jlyn Garrett; a sister, Maria (George) Flint of Atlanta, GA; a niece and nephew, Takia and Anthony Rice; and by his father, Chavis Pinkney. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, 575-356-4455, wheelermortuary.net

Victoria and family: I am saddened by his passing. He was born one week ahead of me. He is very young but I know he will be remembered by all his fans.

Victoria: I was so saddened to hear the news of your husband. He was too young but God called him home for a reason. I know what you are going through, as I just did. If you want to talk, call me. I am in Hobbs and listed in the directory...or email.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.
