Ruth Weems Obituary

Published by Clovis News Journal and the Portales News-Tribune from Jul. 4 to Jul. 5, 2008.
Funeral services for Ruth Weems, 81, of Portales will be 10:00 AM, Monday, July 7, 2008, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Steve Smith and Rev. James Terry officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with David Inge, Wesley Weems, Callen Mitchell, Aaron Weems, Luke Weems and David Owens serving as pallbearers.  All of her great-grandsons and the members of the Roosevelt General Hospital Auxiliary will be honorary pallbearers.
Ruth Weems was born July 30, 1926, in Post, TX, to Mary Catherine (Bost) and Joseph Terry, and died on July 2, 2008 in Portales.  She is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, by God's saving Grace.  She accepted his free gift of salvation many years ago.  She loved the Lord and trusted in Him daily.  Ruth was the 7th child born in a family of 10.  When she was a young girl the family moved to Portales and farmed west of town.
On April 11, 1942, she married Wesley Callen Weems, and they farmed and had a small dairy.  After the death of her husband in 1962, Ruth continued farming until it became too much of a hardship, and she found work elsewhere.  The last place she worked was Roosevelt General Hospital where she was a cook and the nutritionist.  She loved her work because it allowed her to help others, which was always her gift from the Lord.  After she retired from work, she was a Pink Lady for more than 18 years, and had more than 13,500 hours logged as a volunteer.
Ruth was well known for her skill in baking.  She probably baked thousands of cakes, pies, cookies, and candy.  No matter who you were, or what time of day you dropped by her home she always had a piece of fresh apple cake, pumpkin bread, beef jerky or her famous chocolate chip cookies to send home with you.  Her oven was never turned off.  Up until the time her health kept her from it, Ruth enjoyed taking food to shut-ins.
She is survived by two sons, Chris Weems and wife, Janice of Portales and Tracy Weems of Abilene, TX; two daughters, Demarys and husband, Ronnie Mitchell of Portales, and Nelda and husband, Kim Berntson of Ridgecrest, CA.  She is also survived by one brother, David and wife, Juanita Terry of Floyd, NM; 14 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wesley; her parents, Mary and Joseph; a daughter, Tolitha Inge; 3 grandsons; four sisters, Lola May Hill, Lucille Hill, Anna Rains, and Ruby Riley, and four brothers, Lewis Terry, Willard (Bill) Terry, Lynn (Pete) Terry and Ray Terry.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Arrangements by Wheeler Mortuary, 575-356-4455.

Tracy,
I'm so sorry to hear that your Mom passed. I worked with her at the hospital there in Portales many years ago. She was a special lady. I'll never forget her red hair or her smile.I just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.
