Iris Gaines was born March 11, 1923, in Corona, NM to the home of Addie and Hugh F. Nelson and died Feb. 26, 2014, in Portales, NM. Iris's father worked on ranches in various locations while she was a girl, so she grew up moving from place to place until the family settled in Dora in 1938. She was qualified to graduate as the Valedictorian of the class of 1940, but had not lived there long enough to receive that honor. After graduating in May, she was married to L. C. Gaines on July 7, 1940.
Except for the time during World War II, when she lived in California while Mr. Gaines was stationed there, she made her home on the farm they purchased south of Dora. Following L. C.'s stroke in 1962, she practically ran the farm and dairy operation, and could build fence alongside of any man. Iris was well known in the community, and was active in the Dora Church of Christ where her husband was an elder for many years. She served as a Sunday School Teacher for the children of the congregation. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau Women, and served as chairman for several years. In addition she was active in both the Dora and Causey Homemakers Clubs.
Iris enjoyed doing crafts and quilting. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Darryl and Linda Gaines of Haslett, TX and Gerald and Jo Gaines of Dora; five grandchildren, Landon Gaines of Reeseville, WI, Cheryl (Steve) Chancelor of Denton, TX, Kenneth Gaines of Carrollton, TX, Jolinda (Mason) Mapp of Dora and Roy (Katelyn)) Gaines of Dora; eight great-grandchildren, Kyra (Louis) Pizana, Stephanie (Brent) Hays, Cameron Chancelor, Jordan Gaines, Pierson Gaines, Grant Gaines, Elizabeth Gaines and Jeremy Mapp; 1 great-great-grandchild, Rylee Pizana; and a sister, Del Marie (Lloyd) Helgeson of Roseville, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Euel Nelson and by her beloved husband, L. C. Gaines who died Sept. 3, 2002, after more than 62 years of marriage.
