Memorial services for Fred C. Tharp, Jr., 77, will be held Saturday, June 26th, 2:00 p.m. at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton, with The Rev. Ben Wright officiating. Tharp died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.|
Fred C. Tharp, Jr. was born July 31, 1932, in Clovis, NM, to Fred C. Tharp, Sr. and Irma Beazley Tharp. He graduated from Clovis High School in 1950, and married Virginia Marie Buchanan in 1951. In 1958, he graduated from Hardin Simmons University and attended law school at The University of New Mexico, graduating in 1967. Tharp practiced law in Clovis from September 1, 1968 until his retirement September 1, 2009. He was a part-time Federal Magistrate Judge from 1984 until 2002. He had the distinction of being the first Public Defender for the State of New Mexico. He was a member of the New Mexico Bar Association.
Fred had served on the Board and as Board President of Clovis Memorial Hospital. He served on the board for Salvation Army over 30 years and was Board President and served on the board of ENMRSH.
He was an active member of Clovis Masonic Lodge #40 AF & AM, was a member of York Rite College #177, Columbia Chapter #7, Valley Council #4, Comandry #6 where he was Past Eminant Commander and Past Grand High Priest. Fred loved to travel and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church.
He married Janice S. Urban October 12, 1976, in Clovis. She survives him as do his three daughters, Sharon Crowder and her husband, Wes of Euless, TX, Cynthia Lakin-Burke and husband, John of Clovis and Traci Berg and husband, Tom of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Kenneth M. Tharp (Teri Reynolds) of Phoenix, AZ, and Troy Urban of Clovis; four brothers, Roy Patton of Albuquerque, NM, George Tharp of Angleton, TX, Otto Tharp of Riverside, CA, and Paul Daugherty of Clovis. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, Jeremy Lakin, Matthew Ford, Joshua Ford, Marissa Ford, Ashley Hough, Brittany Lakin, Kelsey Hough, David Tharp, Erica Berg, Ethan Berg, and Andrew Berg; and two great grandchildren, Rebecca Lakin and Elizabeth Lakin.
Fred was preceded by his parents, Fred Tharp and Irma Thompson; a granddaughter, Maggie Tharp, and his step-father, Edward Earl Thompson.
