MSG (ret.) Gene Lamar Whitaker Sr.(1949-2013)

MSG (ret.) Gene Lamar Whitaker Sr., 64, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Savannah Hospice Care in Savannah.
Born July 2, 1949 in Columbia, he was a son of 1SG (ret.) Louie W. and Thelma Lindler Whitaker of Chapin. He was veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the U.S. Army in 1988. Gene proudly served his country in Germany, Okinawa, Korea and several stateside assignments. After retirement, Gene continued to serve by training soldiers worldwide on new equipment entering the Army's inventory for more than 20 years. He was a master instructor and fielding chief for a number of Department of Defense contractors.
In addition to his parents, Gene is survived by his wife, Hwa Sun, of Hinesville; daughter and son-in-law Susan and DJ Sa of Cumming; sons and daughters-in-law, James L. and Stormy Whitaker of Savannah and Gene L. Jr. and Catherine Whitaker of Marietta; one grandchild, Cindy; a step-grandchild, Zander, both of Savannah; brother, MSG (ret.) Donald (Pam) Whitaker of Pomaria; sister, Karen (Les) Sutphin of Columbia; sister-in-law, Jackie Whitaker of Columbia; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Gene was predeceased by his brother, CPO (ret.) Alvin L. Whitaker.
Services for MSG Whitaker will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept 7, at Caughman-Harmon Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington, S.C., conducted by Pastor Dale Gooding. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church cemetery in Chapin.
