Bishop James Sumpter, 89, departed this life on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at his Midway residence.
He was a native of Savannah, born to the late Hardy and Mary Ford Sumpter. He moved to New York at an early age and retired from Acme Corrugated Box Company. He was an assistant pastor at Jordan Chapel in New York.
After retirement, he returned to Georgia where he served as bishop of Trinity Holiness Church in Midway. Later he became a member of St. James Community Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Sumpter; a granddaughter, Lavette Johnson; and a grandson, Lawrence Sumpter.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Maggie James Sumpter of Midway; a granddaughter, Joann Lewis; grandson-in-law, Alvin Lewis, seven great-grandchildren, Jasmyn Johnson, Lawrence Johnson, Lawrence Sumpter, Alquana Bynum, Shaniece Sumpter, Altasia Lewis and Tyshawn Sumpter; three great-great-grandchildren, Zyon Johnson, Malasia Jones and Maliyah Desilva; three sisters-in-law, Viola Robertson, Minnie James and Rachel James, all of Midway; a loving goddaughter, Jannie Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends.
His visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midway.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at St James Community Church, 1140 Holmestown Road, Midway. His body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. for viewing until hour of service. Burial will be in St James Church Cemetery in Holmestown.
