Sam P. Ray Jr., 68, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at his Jesup residence with family by his side while under the care of Hospice.
Mr. Ray was a native of Liberty County, born April 19, 1945, to the late Sam Sr. and Mary Ray. Sam had been living in Jesup for the past seven years, having moved there from Waycross. He was a Bradwell Institute graduate with the class of 1963.
Mr. Ray was a veteran of the Vietnam era, having served with the United States Air Force
. He was public works director for the city of Waycross and retired after more than 30 years of service.
Sam was an avid sports fan, who loved to fish, cook and garden. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Mr. Ray will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Jessica Ray of Acworth; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Chris Lanier of Albany; grandchildren, Madeline, Lanna, Abbie, Sam IV and Ben; sisters, June Terreso of Hinesville, Erline Jacobson of Allenhurst, Betty McMillian of Greensboro, N.C., Irene Owen of Birmingham, Ala., and Sharon Madden of Hinesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
The memorial service will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Sweetwater Baptist Church in Waycross with the Rev. Chris Tolbert officiating.
