James Fred Gunter, 92, of Elizabeth, Ill., formerly of Hinesville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home.

A family service was held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21.
Mr. Fred Gunter was born April 4, 1921, in Comer, Ga., the son of Mack and Lavonia Gunter. He married Claire Elizabeth Floyd of Hinesville on Oct. 30, 1945.
Fred was in active and reserve military service, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. In World War II he served in North Africa, Italy, New Guinea, and the Philippines.
He received his Master's Degree from Georgia State University where he also served as an instructor. He was the administrator of South Fulton Hospital in the Atlanta area.
Fred attended the First Methodist Church of Hinesville, and was a member of the Rotary Club for 52 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Anita (Les) Montgomery of Galena, Ill., and two grandchildren, Mindy (Tom) McKeaige of Woodridge, Ill., and Joy Montgomery (Paul Riese) of Carpentersville, Ill.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Claire, and 17 brothers and sisters. Fred's family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the Elizabeth Nursing Home for the kindness and care he received while residing there.
