Mr. Lewis V. Johnson Sr., 92, of Twin City, passed onto glory on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at his home surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, in the El Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Phil Wilson and Rob Gray officiating.
Interment will be in the El Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Durden-Hudson Funeral Home in Swainsboro.
Pallbearers are Roger Snyder, Trai Johnson, Troy Johnson, Darrel Sherrod, Ben Lambert, Evan Johnson, Austin Sherrod and Bray Sherrod.
Mr. Johnson was born in Summit, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked the United States on Dec. 7, 1941, also served as chief torpedo man in the Guadalcanal campaign, earning him several medals during his service that include: WWII Victory; American Defense; American Area Medal; European, African and Mid-East Campaigns; Asiatic Pacific Theater; Good Conduct and Presidential Unit Citation.
After service, he earned his four-year college degree from the present Georgia Southern University in 1950, his Master's Degree in Education from Georgia Peabody College in 1953 and completed his specialist degree from the University of Georgia in 1960. Mr. Johnson put his education to great use, teaching in Baxley and Toccoa, serving as principal in Summertown, Newington, Millen and Hinesville, where he was also assistant school superintendent.
His extensive community involvement includes: member of El Bethel Baptist Church also serving as deacon, the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, Lions Club, VOCA Club Board, Southeastern Tech Board and was also the "Voice of the Bulldogs" announcer at the Emanuel County Institute home football games for 20 years.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Grady Sr. and Mamie Lanier Johnson; his siblings, Wilmeth Parrish, Jack Johnson, Grady Buck Johnson Jr. and Cedric Johnson; his wife of 52 years, Clava Odom Johnson; and son, Lewis V. Johnson Jr.
Survivors include his wife: Dot Henry Johnson of Twin City; daughter and son-in-law, Alice Lee and Albert Remler of Carrollton; daughter-in-law, Sybil W. Johnson of Twin City; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Savell (Glenn) of Summerdale, Ala., and Terri Byrd of Fairhope, Ala.; six grandchildren, Allison Lambert, Ben Lambert, Trai Johnson (Pam), Troy Johnson (Glenna Henry) and Kelly Sherrod (Darrel); three great-grandsons: Evan Johnson, Austin Sherrod and Bray Sherrod; and special friend and caregiver, Gale Woods.
