Alexander Hinely Obituary

Alexander Orr Hinely, a native of Liberty County, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013.
In his final months and weeks Alex was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully after a year-long battle with cancer, which he handled with as much grace and bravery as he lived his 73 years of life. A Southerner by descent and desire, Alex was the quintessential Southern gentleman. Raised in Hinesville with his brother Jimmy, who preceded him in death, and sister Mary Ann, Alex went on to graduate from the University of Georgia and remained a loyal Georgia Bulldog alum for the next 50 years.
With a degree in mathematics, Alex went on to serve in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Jacksonville, Alex met and married the love of his life, Betty. Together Betty and Alex had two children, Thomas and Elizabeth and settled in Satellite Beach.
After 24 years of active and reservist duty, Alex retired with a rank of naval commander. During his years in Brevard County, Alex was most proud of his professional contributions to the Apollo space program.
After his retirement, Alex filled his days with family, friends and his favorite pastimes; golf, fishing, travel, genealogy research of his German heritage and crossword puzzles, which were always at his fingertips. But for all his personal and professional accomplishments, Alex was most proud of his 42 years of marriage to Betty, his son Tom, daughter Liz and grandchildren Grayson Lagasse, 6, Finn Hinely, 5, and Sidney Lagasse, 4, who will be his greatest legacy.
Alex is survived by his wife Bett; son Thomas and daughter-in-law Peg Hinely; daughter Elizabeth Lagasse and son-in-law Michael Lagasse; and three grandchildren, Grayson and Sidney Lagasse and Finn Hinely; and his sister, Mary Ann Hinely.
Services were at Beach Funeral Home in Indian Harbor Beach on July 6.
There will also be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Flemington Presbyterian Church. The family requests no flowers.

Betty and family so sorry to hear about Alex. Just found out about it from a friend in Liberty Co. We were neighbors in Hinesville. Our families were good friends.
