Benita Cruz, 86, of Hinesville, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Memorial Medical Health University in Savannah.

Benita Cruz was born on April 20, 1927, in Humacao, Puerto Rico. At the age of 25, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she lived and worked until 1973. Shortly after, Ms. Cruz moved to Camden, N.J., where she became a certified nursing assistant.
Ms. Cruz dedicated her life to helping everyone she came in contact with, whether a friend or stranger on the street. She made sure everyone was treated like family. She loved her family deeply and through her hard work and struggles, was able to bring all of her family from Puerto Rico to New York.
In 1992, Ms. Cruz finally made Hinesville her home away from Brooklyn. Here she met numerous friends, cared for children, raised grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and where her final resting place would be with her Father in Heaven.
She loved to cook, do crossword puzzles and spend time with her family. Mrs. Cruz was of the Roman Catholic faith. Ms. Cruz will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.
Ms. Cruz is survived by three children, son and daughter-in-law, Nestor and Gloria Velasquez of Reidsville, daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Johnnie Garcia Sr. of Hinesville and son and daughter-in-law, Igrain and Kassandra Padilla of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and her loving companion for many years, her teacup Yorkie, Celina.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Flemington.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Georgina Pedraza officiating.
Pallbearers will be Johnnie Garcia Sr., Shaun K. Tooley, Johnnie Garcia Jr., Patrice Parris, Johma Garcia and Patrick Sammons.
