David J. "Bake" Bakey, DBA, of Hinesville, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Hospice Savannah, after a nine-year battle with Parkinson's disease.

Bakey was a native of Wilmington, Del., born on March 24, 1948, to the late William J. and Florence P. Bakey. He was a 1966 graduate of P.S. DuPont High School, and worked first for the DuPont Company, then as a management consultant for many years. He was a member of the Delaware National Guard and the Individual Ready Reserve for 30 years, where he achieved the rank of major.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from National University in San Diego, Calif., in 1990 and 1991. He moved to Hinesville in 1993 and served first as the assistant site director and later as the site director for Central Texas College at the Army Education Center on Fort Stewart from 1994 until 2001. During this time he also taught accounting classes for Savannah Technical College at the Liberty Campus. He earned his doctorate in business administration in 2003 from the University of Sarasota and returned to CTC as the site director that year, where he remained until his death.
While at the Education Center, Bakey also taught accounting, finance and management classes for Columbia College, Webster University, CTC and Waycross College (through the Liberty Center). He was named to Who's Who Among Teachers at America's Colleges and Universities three times, having been nominated by his students.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 21 years, Beth White Bakey; four daughters, Kim (Chris) Aloi, Kelie Bakey, Stephanie Foraker, all of Wilmington, and Meaghan Bakey of Hinesville; a son, David, of Wilmington; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Kay (Al) Simeone, of Newark, Del., Lynn Blackwell, of West Grove, Pa.; a brother, Michael of Wilmington; an aunt, Grace (Richard) Rowe of Wilmington; a number of nieces, nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law; many friends and co-workers; and hundreds of students.
Dr. Bakey was cremated, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m., in the auditorium at the Army Education Center, 100 Knowledge Drive, Fort Stewart.
