LUDOWICI - William "Billy" Wilkinson, 85, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah. He was born in Glennville and lived in Long County all of his life. He was a graduate of Ludowici High School, where he played basketball. He attended Brewton-Parker and Georgia Southern colleges.
Billy retired from civil service at Fort Stewart with 27 years of service. He first worked in forestry and then as a supervisor in roads and grounds. He was a farmer and forester. As part of an anti-drug campaign, he hosted fishing derbies for kids. He was a charter member of the Long County Chamber of Commerce and was the only male member of the Long County Garden Club. Billy served his country in the National Guard, Unit 101, which was activated for the Korean Conflict in 1947. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Ludowici and the Andrew Sunday school class. He also served on numerous committees in the church. His son, Bill Wilkinson, preceded him in death.
Survivors are his wife, Geraldine Blount Wilkinson of Ludowici; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Jim Niksch of Allenhurst, Lisa Wilkinson of Jesup and Cindy and Ricky Chambless of Ludowici; grandchildren, Tina Peacock, Brandi Sollosi, Amber Duke, Rick Chambless and Brett Chambless; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Ludowici First Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating.
Visitation will be one hour before services at the church.
Burial will be private.
Active pallbearers will be Wayne Bland, Devon McClelland, Ricky Peacock, Colton Peacock, Clint Wilkinson and Clifford Randall.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hospice of South Georgia staff and Golden Living Center staff.
