Mrs. Lola Dale Perry Dixon, 97, of Midway, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was a native of Liberty County and faithfully served her community for many years. Mrs. Lola Dixon was educated at the historic Dorchester Academy in Midway. She received her nursing degree at Gillespie School of Nursing in Marietta, where she graduated with honors as salutatorian of the class of 1961.
In September of 1961, shortly after graduating, Mrs. Dixon was employed at the new Liberty Memorial Hospital as a nurse, making her the first black nurse on staff. Later, she was recruited by Dr. Frank T. Robbins to work as the nurse in his private practice, retiring in 1979. In the early 1980s she returned to nursing and worked a short while at the nursing home in Midway.
Mrs. Lola Dixon was an active member of St. Peter's AME Church, where over the years she served as a steward, stewardess, trustee, missionary, usher board president and church secretary.
Her community involvement included; member of the Liberty County Cosmopolitan Club, the Liberty County Board of Health, Order of the Golden Circle, and life member of Limerick Chapter #336 Order of the Eastern Stars.
Mrs. Lola Dixon had earned many awards, including the Trailblazer Award presented by the Liberty County MLK Jr. Observance Committee, honoring her service and dedication to nursing as well her historical value to Liberty County.
Mrs. Lola Dixon was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Mr. Willie Dixon, and by her children, Clara Belle Dixon Beamon and Perry W. Haynes.
She leaves to cherish her memory grandchildren she adopted and raised as her very own, Willa Dixon Lewis (John) and Sonia M. Bacon (Reginald) of Midway; and Lawrence H. Dixon (Sansanee) of Olympia, Wash.; grandchildren, Gary Haynes, Donna Walker, Leon Haynes and Doyle Haynes, all of Tampa, Fla., Garvari T. Dixon Lewis and Sydni A. Bacon, both of Midway, and Ariana Dixon of Olympia, Wash.; brother, Charles Ernest Perry (Pearl) of Passaic, N.J.; three sisters, Eunice Simpson of Hinesville, Algertha Garner of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Louise Anderson of Killeen, Texas; 21 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Her wake will from 6-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midway. Her homegoing celebration will be at noon Saturday, March 1, at St. Peter's AME Church in Midway. Interment will be in St. Peter's AME Church Memorial Gardens.
