Charles E. Smith, 68, of Hinesville, departed this life Monday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Liberty Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born in Baxley to the late Walter and Ola Mae Smith. He graduated from Appling County Consolidated High School, Class of 1963. In June 1964, he joined the United States Army; served honorably until he retired as first sergeant with Service Battery 3rd Battalion 41st FA on Fort Stewart in 1992. Along with many other awards and commendations, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Ann Johnson, Mary Ann Watson, Rose Mary Smith; and one brother, Morman James Smith.
His survivors include his wife of 26 years, Chae Pun Smith; children, Paul (Heather) Green, Stefanie Smith, Clarence (Teresa) Green and Christopher Smith; two brothers, Adrian (Lizzy) Smith and Walter L. Smith; a sister, Elaine (Kelly) Moody; an aunt, Gloristeen Harris; an uncle, Maxwell Williams; eight grandchildren, and his former wife, Virginia Smith.
His wake will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 E. Oglethorpe Highway, Midway.
His funeral service will be at noon Friday, Feb. 28, at the First African Missionary Baptist Church on Commerce Street in Baxley. The Rev. J.M. Blair will officiate.
