Mr. James "Jimmy" West Sr. departed this life on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at his Riceboro residence.
The Guest Book is expired.
Mr. West was the second son of Wilfred and Florence West. He was born Dec. 15, 1915, in Riceboro. He reminisced lovingly of growing up with a strong family, including his hard working father, a strong and gentle mother, his sisters, Pearlie and Dora, and his brothers, Emmett and Tim.
Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, was always a hardworking man. He did carpentry, construction and auto repair. He did construction and engineering work on Fort Stewart. Jimmy worked for Mutual Fertilizer and Jerome Construction in Savannah. He retired from Eastern Construction Company of Savannah in 1976.
Jimmy may have retired from his public job, but he never stopped working. He was an accomplished farmer. If you wanted collards, see Jimmy West.
He was a devoted Atlanta Braves fan and seldom missed a game. His favorite players were third baseman Chipper Jones and outfielder Andrew Jones.
Jimmy leaves to cherish his memory his eight children, Edith (Alfred), Clannie (Ronell), Earl (Alice), Beverly (Gene), Florence, Lonnie, Jerome and Pamela; a loving sister, Maedell Pace; more than 32 grandchildren; approximately 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be from 1-5 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the funeral home.
His funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at First African Baptist Church, 1709 Barrington Ferry Road in Riceboro. His body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
